Angela Lee Duckworth: What Is The key to success? Grit

In this short TED talk on the subject of education, Angela discusses her studies into why some people succeed despite having lower IQs while other smarter people may fail.

She identifies the influencing factor as ‘grit’, that being the ability to stick in there despite the inevitable challenges.

Although she is mainly discussing children in the classroom, she touches on military cadets, sales professionals, and teachers working in deprived areas. Again, the factor determining staying power seems to be how ‘gritty’ the person is.

I feel that Angela’s comments can easily be applied to those of us in the home business arena. We certainly have our fair share of setbacks and failure, but those who wish to come out the other side with lessons learned, ready to move forward again will be those with grit.

As Angela says, treat life as a marathon, not a sprint. I will add: treat your business the same way, as it is the way we handle the setbacks that ultimately determines our success.

Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn’t the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of “grit” as a predictor of success.
